Behm, Anne Grimes, Ohio folk musician, 2 expert on Midwest musical heritage OBERLIN Anne Grimes, 91, was an Ohio folk musician who played and collected dulcimers and was considered an authority on the musical heritage of the Midwest.

She died Jan. 14. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. today at Kendal at Oberlin, a retirement community, where she was a resident when she died. In the early 1950s, Grimes traveled throughout Ohio's back country, townships and cities searching for ballads and folksongs.

She recorded, researched and sang the songs. Through the years, she became an expert in the lore and techniques of the dulcimer. She also was a classically trained vocalist and accomplished pianist. She preferred playing the dulcimer by plucking the stringed instrument with her hands, or sometimes using a feather. Seven years ago, she and Joe Hickerson, a folklorist with the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, performed traditional songs at the National Museum of American History in Washington.

Her 1957 recording of "Ohio State Ballads: History Through Folk Songs: Anne Grimes, With Dulcimer," was reissued in 1991 on cassette by the Smithsonian Institution. In a 1971 interview with the Columbus Citizen-Journal, she said, "Everybody thinks you find folk music in the hills. You don't it's in people's heads." Her audiotape collection is in the Ohio Historical Society and the Library of Congress. Grimes was past president and editor of the Ohio Folklore Society, a member of the advisory Board of the National Folk Festival, and an archivist of the National Federal of Music Clubs. She was the recipient of a Distinguished Career in Music Award at The Ohio State University School of Music Honors Convocation, and the Alumni Awards Distinguished Achievement Citation from Ohio Wesleyan University.

Grimes was born in Columbus and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with bachelor's and music degrees. She served as a judge from 1961 to 1993 at the national competition Dulcimer Days in Roscoe, Ohio. Her husband, James Grimes, was chairman of the Art Department at Denison University, when he retired in 1969. He died in 1981. Surviving are a son, of Westerville; daughters, Sally, of Amherst, Jennifer Kay; of Chagrin Falls, Mary, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mindy, of Hotchkiss, a grandson; and three great-grandchildren.
