The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, more commonly known as the T, is one of the oldest public transit systems in the United States.

The MBTA is established (1964)

The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, or the "the T," was established in August 1964. The MBTA took the place of the MTA and expanded the original 14 service areas to 78 towns and cities.

"Charlie on the MTA" was written as a campaign song for Mayoral candidate Walter A. O'Brien, Jr. in 1949. It tells the story of a subway rider named Charlie, stuck on an endless train ride underneath the streets of Boston because he was unable to pay the exit fare.

Amtrak operates and maintains the 37.9-mile Attleboro Line, between Boston and the Rhode Island state line, for Amtrak Northeast Corridor and commuter service. It is owned by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).
